I have been a Technical Evaluator on the Global Technical Operations team at National Geographic for three years.
A Bird's Eye View of Quality Control
Working in both Adobe Premiere and Transkoder, I have reviewed thousands of hours of footage, both SDR and HDR. The QC itself requires a high attention to detail, to ensure that the highest quality product is released into the world. An advanced knowledge of National Geographic’s technical specifications is imperative, so that video and audio files will not cause issues downstream with internal and external entities. No show or documentary has the same flags/issues. The flags range from blanking, compression artifacts/banding, sync issues, and dead pixels, to missing blurs or voice modification to conceal subjects’ identities. It is a high-pressure job, meeting quick deadlines and preventing issues from going to air, but it is a rewarding one.
